ARTSY ONSITE

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending my first Artsy OnSite, at Ameringer | McEnery | Yohe.  Artist Patrick Wilson, whose exhibition opens at the gallery this evening, was on hand to discuss his suite of paintings on view.  While sipping sparkling wine, a small group of us heard from the artist on topics such as his inspiration, creative process, and execution.  He also briefly discussed his use of color, which particularly piqued my interest.

GIVE ME LOVE

Yayoi Kusama's Give Me Love, on view now at David Zwirner Gallery, has me seeing spots.

Upon entering the gallery, which is fully open to the street, you are confronted with a little house which is furnished completely in white, from floor to ceiling.  Each visitor is given a sheet of polka dot stickers, and you are encouraged to use all of them to decorate obliterate the space.  

Also accompanying the Obliteration Room are some of Kusama's pumpkins as well as a number of paintings in the space next door.  It's difficult to be unhappy while surrounded by colorful spots, and to be able to participate in the madness makes it that much more fun.

Give Me Love is on view through June 13 at 519 and 525 West 19th Street in NYC.

PLEASE TOUCH THE ART

I had so much fun on Sunday walking along the Brooklyn promenade, spotting Jeppe Hein's new installations, Modified Social Benches.  Part of the Public Art Fund's exhibition Please Touch the Art, the oddly shaped, neon benches encourage interaction with the viewer/participant and challenge the isolation of life in the city.

FRIEZE, FRAMED

Last night, I attended the VIP preview of Frieze New York, the yearly art fair housed in a giant tent on Randall's Island in NYC.  Among some of my favorite artworks on view were these paintings by Daniel Rich at Peter Blum Gallery's booth.  I wasn't familiar with Rich's work, but it called to mind the paintings of Charles Sheeler, with their technical detail.  Upon perusing further, I found that Rich paints similar works of different cities throughout the world, and the one I gravitated toward (pictured here) was from Rio de Janeiro.  I think a visit is in order!

RIP Chris Burden

Rest in peace, artist Chris Burden, who passed away yesterday at the age of 69.

From his seminal performance piece Shoot (1971), in which he was shot in the arm, to his retropsective last year at the New Museum (which was overwhelmingly expansive in theme and medium), Burden covered a lot of ground in his 40 year career.  This image is from my favorite Burden work, LA Police Uniforms, created in collaboration with the Fabric Workshop and Museum in 1993.  Read my full post here.
